After Liam’s diagnosis in 2001, we felt powerless and overwhelmed. We began searching for information to help us manage. One of the first organizations we found was the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. In May of 2002, we formed Team Liam. Joined by our family and friends, we walked and raised over $12,000! We have participated in the Walk to Cure Diabetes every year since, and in 9 years so far, have raised over $250,000! Over the years we have attended the Journey to a Cure Gala. Along with the help and support of our friends and family we have raised over $300,000 total through both events. We have also spent numerous hours volunteering and raising awareness in the community.
In February of 2006 Liam met with Congressman Brian Higgins as part of JDRF’s Promise to Remember Me Campaign. Liam told Congressman Higgins what it is like to live with type 1 diabetes. Liam asked Congressman Higgins to support legislation, which would provide valuable funding for research to cure diabetes.
Every 2 years JDRF holds it’s Children’s Congress. Delegates from across the country are selected through an application process. In June, selected delegates will travel to Washington, D.C. to lobby Congress and the Senate to fund research for a cure. Liam was selected as one of 9 delegates from New York State. He will represent Western New York at the 2011 Children's Congress.
